As callous and awful as this looks it is tragically quite common. I can remember a near identical version I heard back in 1983. A girl working at a nursing home talking about a dying patient and the staff used it as a smoke break. It was like down time for them. She got assigned the job by a welfare to work program. She had two kids before she was 18. The unspoken issue here is death, and how the living cope. The atmosphere created in a nursing home is: the patient is nearly dead the patient gets a break so should we.
